Linux 7.4 kernel introduces support for Apple M4 and Google Tensor G5
The upcoming Linux 7.4 kernel development cycle includes significant hardware support updates, most notably bringing initial support for Apple’s M4 and A18 Pro SoCs. While current support for these chips is minimal—primarily allowing the kernel to boot—it covers various devices including the 2024 MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini, as well as upcoming 2025 MacBook Air models.
Other major hardware additions include the Google Tensor G5 (codenamed Laguna) for the Pixel 10, two new Qualcomm SoCs using custom Oryon cores, and Valve’s Steam Frame VR headset.
For AMD users, Linux 7.4 will enable HDMI 2.1 by default for Radeon graphics cards, integrating Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) to improve gaming and media experiences. Additionally, the AMD PerfOpt technology will enable IOMMU by default to enhance performance for Artificial Intelligence workloads, such as Large Language Models (LLMs).
