Linux kernel hardware and I/O development
Overview
The Linux kernel has seen consecutive updates focused on expanding hardware compatibility and optimizing I/O performance.
Version 7.3 introduced significant improvements to storage and block layers, including optimizations for Btrfs, ext4, F2FS, and FUSE. This release also added FailFS, a new virtual file system for kernel-internal use, and expanded support for upcoming AMD Zen 6 and Intel processors, as well as Apple M3 series SoCs. Specifically, Btrfs saw a fivefold increase in speed for intensive fsync workloads on non-SSD drives, while Ext4 was optimized for parallel writes. Notably, the ‘data=journal’ mount mode in Ext4 is now deprecated and scheduled for removal in 2028.
Subsequent development for version 7.4 has expanded hardware support to include Apple’s M4 and A18 Pro SoCs, the Google Tensor G5, and new Qualcomm SoCs. For AMD users, the 7.4 cycle aims to enable HDMI 2.1 features by default for Radeon graphics and implement AMD PerfOpt technology to enable IOMMU by default for AI workloads.
Early development for version 7.5 has commenced, with pull requests focusing on graphics and NPU drivers. These include updates for the Panfrost driver to support Arm Mali GPUs and enhancements to the AMD XDNA driver to improve Ryzen AI NPU performance monitoring. Additionally, FUSE now utilizes asynchronous I/O via io_uring to reduce memory consumption, and the kernel has implemented new VRAM management to offload buffers to system RAM for priority applications via the nouveau, xe, and amdgpu drivers.
