Linux and open-source software see major updates and KDE 30th anniversary

The open-source community saw significant updates across various Linux distributions and software projects during mid-October 2026. Ubuntu released version 26.10, featuring GNOME 51, Linux Kernel 7.3, and Rust-based coreutils. Other notable distribution updates included Omarchy 4.0.5 and the privacy-focused Tails 7.15.

A major milestone occurred with the 30th anniversary of KDE, marked by the release of Plasma 6.8, the 30th Anniversary Edition. This release includes improvements to the desktop experience, such as the Hanabi default wallpaper and Nepali calendar support. The anniversary was also commemorated with the premiere of a KDE documentary.

Other software updates included KDE Plasma 6.8 dropping X11 sessions after 30 years, GNOME 51.1, and Firefox 158, which added JPEG XL support. Additionally, LibreOffice, Samba, and various security-focused tools like Gitea and PeaZip released new versions.
