Linux and open-source software updates
Overview
The open-source community experienced several major software releases in October 2026. Ubuntu saw the release of version 26.10, which features the GNOME 51 desktop environment, Linux Kernel 7.3, and Rust-based coreutils. This version moved exclusively to Wayland and introduced features such as advanced window tiling and integrated monitoring for AMD-Ryzen Neural Processing Units.
Canonical also released Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, codenamed ‘Resolute Raccoon’, which provides free support until 2031. This long-term support version includes Linux kernel 7.0 and the GNOME 50 desktop environment, which also removed support for X11 sessions.
Other significant developments included the 30th anniversary of KDE, marked by the release of Plasma 6.8, the 30th Anniversary Edition. This release also dropped X11 sessions after three decades. Additionally, Firefox 158 introduced JPEG XL support, and various other tools including LibreOffice and Samba released new versions.
