Linux kernel updates introduce storage optimizations and hardware support
Linus Torvalds has announced the release of Linux kernel 7.3, an update featuring over 20,000 patches from more than 3,000 developers. This version introduces significant storage performance improvements, particularly for the Btrfs file system, which has seen a fivefold increase in speed for intensive fsync workloads on non-SSD drives. Additionally, Ext4 has been optimized for parallel writes, though the 'data=journal' mount mode is now deprecated and scheduled for removal in 2028.
The update also includes support for Apple M3 chips and enhancements to FUSE, which now utilizes asynchronous I/O via io_uring to reduce memory consumption. For graphics and memory management, the kernel now handles VRAM scarcity by offloading buffers to system RAM for priority applications, a change supported by nouveau, xe, and amdgpu drivers.
Looking ahead to Linux 7.5, developers have already begun submitting pull requests for graphics and NPU drivers. These early developments include enhancements for the AMD XDNA driver to better monitor Ryzen AI NPU performance and updates for Panfrost to support Arm Mali GPUs.
