Over 4.5 million Italians skip medical visits as health system strains discussed at Milan’s Cantiere Salute

More than 4.5 million Italians have foregone doctor visits, examinations or treatments because public‑system waiting lists stretch from two to twelve months and private services have become increasingly unaffordable. The issue was a central topic at the first edition of Cantiere Salute, held at the MiCo convention centre in Milan and organised by Fondazione The Bridge and Inrete to bring together institutions, professionals, industry and patient groups.

Robert Nisticò, president of AIFA, warned that over‑65s now account for over 24 % of the population and that more than 24 million people live with chronic conditions, stressing that innovation is essential to ensure appropriate and high‑quality care. Lombardy vice‑president and finance assessor Marco Alparone said the region is shifting from a volume‑based to a quality‑based model, using digital tools to turn data into knowledge, assess outcomes and allocate resources more efficiently. Regional commissioner Emanuele Monti highlighted the demographic transformation, noting that Lombardy leads Italy with 142 community health houses fully operational and stressing the need for qualified staff, digitalisation and service integration to sustain the National Health Service.

The conference underscored that digital transformation and innovative care pathways are seen as strategic levers to improve patient experience, address the ageing population and preserve the sustainability of Italy’s publicly funded health system.
