Lipoprotein(a) genetic risk increases stroke and heart attack danger

Lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), is a genetically determined cholesterol particle that significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, strokes, and heart attacks. Unlike standard LDL cholesterol, Lp(a) levels are largely set at birth by inherited genes, meaning lifestyle interventions such as diet and exercise have little to no impact on reducing them.

Research involving over 20,000 adults from NIH trials indicates that very high levels of this particle are linked to a 64% higher risk of stroke and a 49% higher risk of cardiovascular death. Because Lp(a) is not included in standard cholesterol panels, approximately one in five people may carry elevated levels without being aware of the risk.

While there is currently no specific medication to treat the condition, individuals diagnosed with high levels often focus on managing other cardiovascular risk factors through lifestyle changes. Scientists are currently investigating new drugs in development to address this inherited risk.
