Lipoprotein(a) cardiovascular risk research

Overview

Research presented at the 2026 Scientific Sessions of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions indicates that approximately one in five people have elevated levels of lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a). This genetically determined particle is often not detected in conventional cholesterol tests.

An analysis of data from over 20,000 participants in NIH-funded clinical studies found that very high concentrations of Lp(a) are associated with significantly increased risks of serious cardiovascular events. Specifically, high levels are linked to a 64% higher risk of stroke and a 49% higher risk of cardiovascular death.

While lifestyle factors like smoking and diet contribute to overall cardiovascular complications, Lp(a) levels are largely set at birth, meaning lifestyle interventions have little impact on reducing them. Although there is currently no specific medication to treat high Lp(a), scientists are investigating new drugs to address this inherited risk.
