Lipoprotein(a) levels linked to increased cardiovascular risk
Research presented at the 2026 Scientific Sessions of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) indicates that approximately one in five people have elevated levels of lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a). This particle, which is primarily determined by genetics, is often not detected in conventional cholesterol tests.
An analysis of data from over 20,000 participants across three clinical studies funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) found that very high concentrations of Lp(a) are associated with an increased risk of serious cardiovascular events, including stroke and cardiovascular death. Lp(a) functions similarly to LDL cholesterol but contains an additional protein that can promote arterial plaque formation.
In addition to genetic factors, lifestyle habits such as smoking, sedentary behavior, chronic stress, poor sleep, and the consumption of ultra-processed foods significantly contribute to cardiovascular complications. Many conditions, including hypertension and high cholesterol, can progress silently without symptoms for years before resulting in a heart attack or stroke.
