Lisbon and surrounding municipalities record hazardous ozone levels

The Regional Coordination and Development Commission for Lisbon and the Tagus Valley (CCDR‑LVT) reported on 5 July that ozone concentrations exceeded the health information threshold of 180 µg/m³ in several municipalities of the Lisbon region. Measurements showed 184 µg/m³ in the Reboleira area of Amadora, 184 µg/m³ in the Olivais neighbourhood of Lisbon, 200 µg/m³ later in Olivais, 183 µg/m³ in the Beato area, 205 µg/m³ in Alverca (Vila Franca de Xira), 211 µg/m³ in Reboleira and 207 µg/m³ in central Loures.

The commission warned that such levels can cause “some health effects, especially for sensitive groups such as children, the elderly, asthmatics and people with respiratory or cardiac conditions”. It advised these groups to minimise intense outdoor activity and avoid prolonged exposure. According to CCDR‑LVT, exposure “affects mainly the ocular and respiratory mucosae and may manifest as cough, headaches, chest pain, shortness of breath and eye irritation”.

The agency previously recorded similar exceedances on the preceding Saturday in Olivais and Alverca, issuing the same recommendations.
