Portugal housing protests continue amid police scrutiny and new mobilizations
Housing rights protests are intensifying across Portugal, with major demonstrations scheduled in Lisbon and Porto. In Lisbon, activists from the Acampada de Lisboa movement plan to march from Largo Luís de Camões to Rossio, where they intend to re-establish overnight encampments despite the upcoming Christmas market.
The demonstrations follow recent police interventions in Lisbon and Porto, where the PSP used batons and dogs to disperse protesters. The South Zone Medical Union has accused the PSP of using disproportionate force, reporting that some injured individuals suffered head traumas consistent with baton impacts. Furthermore, the union alleges that emergency medical services were delayed or prevented from reaching the injured in Rossio.
In response to the unrest, the Inspeção-Geral da Administração Interna (IGAI) has opened an investigation into the police actions, and the Ombudsman has requested urgent information from the PSP. Additionally, the Autoridade Aeronáutica Nacional has implemented drone restrictions over central Lisbon at the request of the PSP to ensure security during the protests.
Beyond the major cities, civic movements like ManifestAM are organizing in the Alto Minho region. A national day of struggle for housing is also planned for November 14, involving various movements across the country.
