Lisbon hosts Michael Haneke retrospective and Operafest
Lisbon will host several significant cultural events this September, including a comprehensive retrospective of Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke and the Operafest festival.
Starting in September, a retrospective of Michael Haneke’s work will be presented in Portuguese cinemas. The program includes his feature films and several television films, many of which are being released commercially in Portugal for the first time. Notable works featured include the ‘Glaciation Trilogy’—comprising ‘The Seventh Continent’ (1989), ‘Benny’s Video’ (1992), and ‘71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance’ (1994)—as well as his adaptation of Franz Kafka’s ‘The Castle’.
Additionally, the Operafest festival returns to Lisbon from September 1 to 11. The festival features a variety of performances, conferences, and cinema cycles across multiple venues, including the Teatro Camões and the Museu de Lisboa. A highlight of the festival is the ‘Ópera Satélite’ cycle, which includes the performance ‘Anátema’, inspired by the works of Camilo Castelo Branco to celebrate the 200th anniversary of his birth. The festival also includes the absolute premiere of two contemporary operas.
