Lisbon police commander calls for more officers and drug support

Luís Elias, Chief Superintendent and commander of the Lisbon Metropolitan Command (Cometlis) of the PSP, has called for increased investment in both police staffing and support for drug addicts. Elias noted that the command is currently operating with the “minimum effective force” required to serve a daily population of approximately three million people across nine municipalities.

Addressing public safety, Elias highlighted a rise in drug trafficking and consumption, specifically noting that cocaine has “democratized” and is now consumed across various social strata due to lower prices and increased supply. He observed that the consumption of cocaine, synthetic drugs, and crack is contributing to crime, including thefts and street robberies, which impacts the public sense of insecurity.

Elias emphasized that while the police combat trafficking, drug addiction should be treated as a public health issue involving health and social security services. He advocated for increased public funding to support street teams and addiction resources to address the epidemic effectively.
