LISGIS and ECOWAS host regional statistical leadership training in Liberia
The Liberia Institute of Statistics and Geo-Information Services (LISGIS) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) recently concluded a five-day regional training program in Monrovia focused on statistical leadership and management. Held from October 5 to 9, 2026, the event brought together representatives from ECOWAS member states and Mauritania to strengthen institutional capacity and regional cooperation.
Organized under the World Bank-funded Project for the Harmonization and Improvement of Statistics in West and Central Africa (HISWACA), the training aimed to improve the coordination of statistical activities and the dissemination of high-quality data. LISGIS Director General Richard Fatorma Ngafuan emphasized the need for statistical institutions to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) and improve their ability to communicate complex data to policymakers and the public.
Ngafuan noted that this marked the first time Liberia has hosted such a statistical leadership training in 16 years, highlighting the country's growing role in regional statistical management.
