ECOWAS regional statistical training in Liberia
Overview
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) launched a five-day leadership and statistical management training program in Monrovia, Liberia. The initiative targeted managers of National Statistical Systems from several member states, including Ghana, Nigeria, Guinea, Togo, and Sierra Leone, to focus on digital transformation, governance, and statistical integrity.
Following the conclusion of the program, which ran from October 5 to 9, 2026, officials noted that the training was organized under the World Bank-funded Project for the Harmonization and Improvement of Statistics in West and Central Africa (HISWACA). Richard Fatorma Ngafuan, Director General of the Liberia Institute of Statistics and Geo-Information Services (LISGIS), emphasized the importance of integrating artificial intelligence and improving data communication to policymakers. This event marked the first time in 16 years that Liberia has hosted such regional statistical leadership training.
