Literacy challenges and new VR training methods emerge

New developments in literacy training and declining reading comprehension rates are highlighting the biological and technical challenges of reading. In Sweden, Imvi Labs has developed a patented method using VR technology to address reading and concentration difficulties. Peter Carlsson of Imvi Labs explains that many reading struggles stem from poor eye coordination, or 'binocular vision.' Research from Karolinska Institutet suggests that 45 percent of students have insufficient coordination between their eyes. The Imvi method uses VR glasses to train the brain to fuse images more effectively, which has reportedly helped students with ADHD and dyslexia improve their reading abilities.

Meanwhile, in Finland, neuroscientist Patrik Wikman from the University of Helsinki notes a decline in reading comprehension among students, a trend observed across the Western world. Wikman emphasizes that while humans are biologically predisposed for speech, the brain has not evolved naturally for reading and writing. He distinguishes between basic literacy—the ability to decode signs into sounds—and true reading comprehension, which requires significant time, practice, and instruction to interpret and evaluate text effectively.
