In Sweden, concerns regarding declining literacy levels have prompted discussions on how to integrate new technologies into education. Educator Stefan Eriksson has argued that as artificial intelligence enters schools, the priority must remain on reading comprehension and critical thinking. He noted that nearly one in five fourth-grade students in Sweden fail to reach basic reading comprehension levels, suggesting that students must be able to evaluate AI-generated information to avoid over-dependence on technology.
Addressing the biological and technical aspects of these literacy challenges, new developments have emerged in Sweden and Finland. Imvi Labs has introduced a VR-based training method designed to assist students with reading and concentration difficulties, such as those with ADHD or dyslexia, by targeting issues like ‘binocular vision.’ This follows research from Karolinska Institutet indicating that 45 percent of students may have insufficient eye coordination.
In Finland, neuroscientists have observed a broader decline in reading comprehension among students, a trend seen across the West. Experts distinguish between basic literacy, or decoding signs into sounds, and true comprehension, which requires intensive instruction to interpret and evaluate text.
