Lithuania advances Rail Baltica and maritime infrastructure projects
Lithuanian Minister of Transport and Communications, Justas Taminskas, expressed optimism that the Rail Baltica project could regain momentum following political changes in Latvia. While the Baltic states have agreed to extend the implementation deadline for the first stage to 2034, Lithuania maintains its goal of completing its portion by the 2030s. The project, which aims to connect Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius, and Warsaw, has seen cost increases due to delays, with the first stage estimated at 15.3 billion euros.
In the maritime sector, the Western Shipyard Group (VLG) is constructing a new dock in Klaipėda. Expected to be operational by autumn of next year, the facility will increase ship repair capacity by at least 10% and accommodate larger, more technically complex vessels. The investment, supported by state aid, aims to strengthen Klaipėda’s role as a regional maritime engineering hub and boost exports.
