Lithuania approves Storm Package to strengthen electricity grid

The Lithuanian government has approved the ‘Storm Package,’ a strategic plan developed by the Ministry of Energy to fundamentally strengthen the nation's electricity grid against extreme weather. The initiative aims to significantly reduce the impact of severe storms, similar to the one that affected the country in August.

By 2030, the government aims to reduce the number of consumers left without power during major storms from 270,000 to approximately 60,000. The plan mandates that electricity supply for disconnected users be restored within 72 hours. For roughly 75% of affected users, power will be restored by repairing the damaged grid, while the remaining 25% in remote areas will be supported by generators and autonomous energy systems.

Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius emphasized that the plan must extend beyond the energy sector to ensure the continued operation of mobile communications and railway infrastructure. Energy Minister Lukas Savickas noted that the strategy focuses on increasing resilience through more underground cabling and maintaining sufficient generator reserves rather than merely repairing existing vulnerabilities.
