Lithuania declares state of emergency over storm damage to agriculture

The Lithuanian government has declared a state of emergency following severe storm damage caused by intense wind and rain on August 22. The decision was made following an expert assessment by the National Crisis Management Centre and an initiative by the Ministry of Agriculture.

Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius stated that the measure aims to ensure all affected farmers are treated equally, regardless of municipal boundaries or administrative procedures. By acting before final damage assessments are completed, the state intends to reduce bureaucratic burdens and allow farmers to focus on restoring their farms.

The declaration provides a formal basis for proving force majeure circumstances, which may assist farmers in meeting obligations they could not fulfill due to the weather. Additionally, the state of emergency is expected to strengthen Lithuania's arguments when seeking agricultural support from the European Union and will facilitate coordinated information gathering and aid distribution.
