Lithuania deploys NASAMS air defense systems near Vilnius

Lithuania has deployed NASAMS (National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems) near its capital, Vilnius, to bolster air defenses against potential Russian attacks. This deployment replaces the previous RBS 70 short-range system, providing greater range, speed, and precision.

The move follows recent drone incursions into NATO airspace in the region and comes amid heightened security concerns on NATO’s eastern flank. Lithuania is currently operating two NASAMS batteries and expects a third by 2028.

To support these and other military modernizations, Lithuania has allocated 4.7 billion euros for defense this year, representing over 5% of its GDP. This funding will also support Piorun missiles, medium-range radar systems, and drone detection equipment. Additionally, the country has deployed personnel to protect critical energy infrastructure following warnings regarding potential Russian sabotage.
