Lithuanian air defense and surveillance modernization

Overview

Lithuania has initiated several measures to strengthen its air defense and airspace surveillance capabilities amid heightened security concerns on NATO’s eastern flank.

In late August 2026, the country deployed NASAMS (National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems) near Vilnius to replace older RBS 70 systems. This deployment aims to provide greater range and precision following drone incursions into regional NATO airspace. To support these efforts, Lithuania has allocated 4.7 billion euros for defense, representing over 5% of its GDP, which also funds radar systems and drone detection equipment.

Following these hardware deployments, the Ministry of National Defense announced a €5 million contract to develop an AI-powered integrated airspace surveillance and control system. This project intends to use artificial intelligence to aggregate real-time data from military sensors and radars to improve the identification of drones and aerial threats. A pilot version is expected by early 2027, with full integration into NATO data transmission platforms scheduled for 2028.
