Lithuania detects migrant tunnels along Belarus border

Lithuanian border guards have discovered a series of underground tunnels being used to facilitate the illegal entry of migrants from Belarus into Lithuania. Since the beginning of the year, authorities have identified 12 such attempts, with some tunnels reaching lengths of up to 25 meters on the Lithuanian side.

One recently discovered tunnel near the village of Latežeris was approximately 1.5 meters deep and reinforced with wooden logs and planks. While some entrances were masked with camouflage, investigators noted that the complexity and materials required for these excavations suggest logistical support from Belarusian authorities. Lithuanian officials believe these actions are part of a broader effort to create political instability along the border.

Lithuanian authorities are currently conducting investigations into suspected human trafficking and illegal excavation. As a security measure, the country plans to relocate emergency food, fuel, and basic supply reserves further from the Belarusian border by 2027.
