Lithuania discovers 12 migrant tunnels at Belarus border
Lithuanian authorities have identified 12 instances between April and August where migrants attempted to use tunnels to bypass physical barriers at the border with Belarus. Interior Minister Martynas Katelynas informed the Seimas that these underground routes represent a growing threat and an illegal alternative for entering the country.
In response, the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service is developing an action plan that includes testing ground-penetrating radars and purchasing specialized equipment to detect underground cavities. The government is also increasing investments in counter-drone capabilities and strengthening cooperation with Frontex to prevent smuggling and irregular migration.
The security situation has been marked by tension, including a reported incident in the Lazdijai district where a Lithuanian officer was allegedly beaten during a confrontation with migrants emerging from a tunnel. Following these developments and public scrutiny regarding border security, Rustamas Liubajevas resigned as head of the State Border Guard Service, stating he was taking responsibility for the service’s activities.
