Lithuania expands intensive care access in district hospitals

Lithuania's Minister of Health, Linas Kukuraitis, has signed legislative amendments to expand intensive care capabilities in district hospitals. The new regulations introduce the concept of territorial intensive care units and implement more flexible requirements for medical equipment.

Under the new framework, district-level hospitals can establish intensive care units with a minimum of three beds using simplified technological requirements. The changes aim to reduce administrative and financial burdens on regional medical institutions while ensuring vital services are closer to residents. Additionally, anesthesiologists and reanimatologists will be permitted to provide emergency assistance in other hospital departments as needed.

The reform also emphasizes regional cluster cooperation between district facilities and major university centers. This model allows patients in critical condition to be transported to regional centers for stabilization, with further transfer decisions coordinated through cluster managers. Beneficiaries of this model include hospitals in Biržai, Kelmė, Kretinga, Plungė, Radviliškis, Raseiniai, Šilutė, Vilkaviškis, and other districts.
