Storms cause widespread damage and power outages in Lithuania and Latvia

A severe storm has caused widespread destruction across Lithuania and Latvia, resulting in significant casualties and massive power outages. In Lithuania, emergency services reported over 1,200 calls in a single day, marking one of the most intense periods of storm-related activity in two decades. The storm caused at least one fatality in the Anykščiai district when a tree fell on a man. Electricity supply was disrupted for approximately 256,000 customers in Lithuania, with heavy impacts in the Kaunas and Utena regions.

In Latvia, the storm triggered the largest power outages in 20 years. By Sunday morning, approximately 277,000 customers were without electricity. The damage to the electrical grid was extensive, affecting 46 of more than 150 high-voltage substations and damaging multiple 330 kV and 110 kV transmission lines. The storm also caused at least one death in Jelgava due to a building structure collapse. Emergency crews have been deployed to clear fallen trees from national and regional roads and to restore power, though repair efforts face challenges from ongoing hazardous weather conditions.
