Lithuania hit by heavy rain and strong winds as storm sweeps the country
A powerful summer storm moved across Lithuania, bringing intense rain, thunder, and wind gusts up to 21‑23 m/s. The storm caused widespread damage, toppling trees, breaking power lines and injuring structures in several districts, including Alytus County where 49 trees were felled. Residents shared video footage of broken branches, uprooted trees and flooded roads, while the city cleaning firm Grinda reported two fallen trees in Vilnius.
Following the storm, the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service forecast a return to drier, more humid conditions for the weekend, with temperatures rising to the low‑20s °C. However, a new atmospheric front is expected to bring additional showers and thunderstorms from Monday onward, especially in western and northern regions, according to meteorologist Simona Dalinkevičiūtė.
