Lithuania Launches Major Transport Infrastructure Projects

Via Lietuva announced a public procurement for the Zarasai bypass, a 9.34‑km, two‑lane highway built under a public‑private partnership (PPP) model. The 25‑year contract will cover design, construction and long‑term maintenance, aiming to divert heavy transit traffic away from the city centre, reduce noise and pollution, and improve safety for residents. Transport Minister Juras Taminskas and Via Lietuva CEO Martynas Gedaminskas highlighted the project as a first‑of‑its‑kind state‑level PPP road in Lithuania, anticipating that its successful launch will spur similar initiatives for other strategic routes.

Separately, the Lithuanian Railways (LTG) opened an international tender to find a designer and contractor for electrifying the railway line to the Rūdninkai military polygon. The project, slated for 2026‑2030, includes constructing an 8.6‑km broad‑gauge track, installing signalling, communications and power systems, and creating a new land parcel for the line. LTG emphasised the strategic importance of the line for rapid deployment of military equipment and personnel. The tender invites both Lithuanian and foreign firms, with the contract expected to be signed by the end of the year.
