Lithuania proposes electricity price relief mechanism for businesses

Lithuania is developing a mechanism to protect businesses during exceptional electricity price surges. The proposed plan would allow non-household consumers to temporarily reduce the state-regulated portion of electricity prices by up to 30 percent.

This assistance is intended to be temporary and repayable, rather than a permanent subsidy. The government would decide annually whether to implement the measure based on the state's financial capacity and market conditions. To qualify, businesses must be energy-intensive, specifically requiring a power capacity of at least 500 kW or an annual electricity consumption of at least 500,000 kWh.

The initiative aims to maintain the competitiveness of Lithuanian manufacturers against global competitors in the US and Asia, preventing issues such as reduced production, halted investments, or relocation to cheaper energy markets. The proposed temporary scheme is intended for the 2027–2031 period, with permanent regulation for non-household electricity and natural gas consumers expected to follow from 2032. The plan will require coordination with the European Commission before implementation.
