Lithuania reports rising border tensions and organized migration attempts

Lithuanian border guards are facing evolving challenges along the border with Belarus, including organized illegal migration, smuggling via drones, and physical attacks such as stone-throwing. Officials report that migration attempts have become highly coordinated, with groups being brought to the border from Belarusian territory. Some groups attempt to breach the physical barrier in less than a minute by using tools to cut fences or create makeshift steps.

In a single 24-hour period, the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service reported turning back 31 irregular migrants. This follows a broader regional trend; Latvia's border service recently denied entry to 55 migrants, while Polish authorities reported no such incidents. Since the onset of the migration crisis in 2021, Lithuania has prevented approximately 26,200 irregular entries from Belarus.
