Lithuania reports shift in cyber threat landscape
According to the National Cyber Security Centre (NKSC), information gathering attacks have become the most frequent cyber threat in Lithuania during the first nine months of 2026, with 499 recorded incidents. This follows a period in 2025 where fraud was the primary threat, accounting for 1,223 incidents during the same timeframe.
NKSC Director Antanas Aleknavičius noted that the decrease in total registered incidents does not imply a reduction in threat levels. Instead, cybercriminals are continuously evolving their methods. Information gathering attacks are often used to identify vulnerabilities and gather data on potential targets to facilitate future, more complex attacks.
Other significant threats identified include phishing, Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, and unauthorized access to information resources. While ransomware and Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) activities have seen a relative decrease in frequency, the NKSC emphasizes the importance of recognizing and responding to these evolving tactics.
