Lithuania returns Russian man who swam from Kaliningrad to seek asylum
A 68-year-old Russian man was returned to Russia after attempting to enter Lithuania by swimming across the Nemunas River from the Kaliningrad exclave. Lithuanian border guards intercepted the man on the riverbank on a Thursday afternoon and provided him with dry clothing.
The man reportedly sought asylum, claiming he was fleeing persecution in Russia due to his social media activity. However, Lithuanian authorities denied his request. Giedrius Mišutis, a spokesperson for the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service, stated that the information provided by the man was inconsistent and that officials had concerns regarding the potential security threat he might pose to the European Union.
While swimming across the Nemunas is considered an unusual method of crossing, Lithuanian officials noted that the area is under continuous technical and camera surveillance, allowing for a rapid response. This incident occurs amid heightened security tensions along Lithuania’s eastern borders with Russia and Belarus.
