Russian asylum seeker Nemunas River incident
Overview
In September 2026, a 68-year-old Russian man, Igor Yuryevich Odintsov, attempted to enter Lithuania by swimming across the Nemunas River from the Kaliningrad exclave. While the man claimed he was seeking asylum to escape persecution related to his social media activity, Lithuanian authorities denied his request. Giedrius Mišutis, a spokesperson for the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service, stated that the man’s information was “inconsistent” and expressed concerns regarding a “potential security threat” to the European Union.
Following his return to Russia, Odintsov was sentenced by Russia’s Baltic Fleet Military Court to six years in a strict-regime penal colony. He was convicted of “publicly justifying terrorism and expressing opposition to state authorities.” The court also issued a three-year ban on his ability to administer websites or online channels upon his release.
