Lithuania reviews emergency protocols after air danger alert

An air danger alert issued in Lithuania last May, following the detection of an unmanned aerial vehicle near the border, has highlighted deficiencies in emergency preparedness among certain institutions. While Lithuania aims to provide shelters for 60 percent of its urban population, the 30-minute alert revealed that some organizations, particularly educational institutions in the Vilnius region, struggled to respond correctly.

Reports indicated that instead of following safety protocols, some students were led outdoors, while others saw attempts to have parents collect them during the alert. In response, regional authorities, such as those in the Plungė district, have held emergency meetings to reinforce safety requirements. Officials emphasized that during such alerts, children must be moved to basements or windowless rooms rather than being sent outside or released to parents.
