Lithuania emergency preparedness and warning system testing

Overview

Following an air danger alert in May triggered by an unmanned aerial vehicle near the border, Lithuania has identified deficiencies in its emergency preparedness. Reports indicated that some institutions, particularly schools in the Vilnius region, failed to follow safety protocols, with some students being led outdoors rather than to secure indoor locations.

In response to these findings, regional authorities have held meetings to reinforce safety requirements. As part of broader mobilization exercises known as ‘Vyčio skliautas 2026’, Lithuania is conducting a nationwide test of its Public Warning and Information System. This exercise includes a three-minute siren test and the distribution of mobile phone emergency alerts, coordinated by the National Crisis Management Center and the Department of Mobilization and Civil Resistance.
