Lithuania seeks to supply US with advanced femtosecond lasers

Lithuania is positioned to support growing United States industries, such as semiconductors and AI data centers, through the export of advanced femtosecond lasers. Following a mid-September agreement between the US and Lithuania regarding critical minerals aimed at reducing dependency on single suppliers, discussions have shifted toward potential partnerships in photonics.

LITILIT, a Lithuanian femtosecond laser company, suggests that these high-precision lasers are essential for advanced semiconductor packaging and the production of optical components, including glass substrates used in modern AI data centers. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has recognized Lithuania as a “photonic power” due to its expertise in the field.

Lithuanian Foreign Affairs Minister Kęstutis Budrys indicated that the country could increase laser exports to the US, potentially establishing a decade-long partnership. This demand for precision manufacturing is already being reflected in US industry moves, such as Intel’s recent focus on laser glass processing for AI chip packaging.
