Lithuania photonics and laser technology partnerships

Overview

Lithuania has entered into new technological partnerships to expand its photonics and laser sectors. In early September, Lithuania and Taiwan signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate on laser technologies and semiconductor manufacturing. This initiative involves a 5.6 million euro investment over two years to fund joint research and equipment upgrades, specifically targeting advanced semiconductor packaging and heterogeneous integration.

Following this, discussions have expanded toward the United States. Building on a mid-September agreement regarding critical minerals, Lithuania is exploring the export of advanced femtosecond lasers to support US semiconductor and AI data center industries. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has referred to Lithuania as a “photonic power,” and Lithuanian Foreign Affairs Minister Kęstutis Budrys indicated that the country may increase laser exports to the US, potentially establishing a decade-long partnership.
