Lithuania sees rise in regular physical activity

Data from the Lithuanian Ministry of Education, Science and Sport reveals an increase in physical activity among the Lithuanian population over the last four years. The proportion of residents who do not exercise at all has decreased from 52% to 48% since 2022.

Daily physical activities, such as walking, cycling, or gardening, have risen from 25% to 42%, surpassing the European Union average of 35%. Additionally, 78% of Lithuanians report walking for at least 10 minutes, four to seven days a week, compared to a 72% EU average.

Motivation for exercise is primarily driven by physical health improvement, cited by 49% of respondents. Furthermore, 97% of Lithuanians believe physical activity improves mental health, higher than the 93% EU average. Minister Raminta Popovienė noted that the state aims to expand accessible sports infrastructure and promote physical activity habits in children through a national program for 2026–2029, supported by over 2.6 million euros.
