Physical activity trends in Lithuania

Overview

Data from the Lithuanian Ministry of Education, Science and Sport indicates a rise in regular physical activity among the population over the last four years. The percentage of residents who do not exercise at all has decreased from 52% to 48% since 2022.

Daily activities such as cycling, gardening, or walking have increased from 25% to 42%, which exceeds the European Union average of 35%. Additionally, 78% of Lithuanians report walking for at least 10 minutes four to seven days a week, compared to a 72% EU average.

Motivation for exercise is largely driven by the desire to improve physical health, cited by 49% of respondents. Furthermore, 97% of Lithuanians believe physical activity improves mental health. To support these trends, Minister Raminta Popovienė noted that the state intends to expand accessible sports infrastructure and promote activity habits in children through a national program for 2026–2029, backed by over 2.6 million euros.
