Lithuania sees surge in flies and wasps as summer heat accelerates breeding
Rising summer temperatures in Lithuania are prompting a rapid increase in fly and wasp populations. Experts note that when ambient heat exceeds 25 °C, the life cycle of house flies can shrink to just 7–10 days, allowing a single pair to produce millions of offspring over the season.
Flies can spread pathogens such as salmonella and dysentery by contaminating food after feeding on waste. They use a sucking proboscis to liquefy solid food, which also releases any microbes they carry. Wasps do not transmit disease, but their stings can cause severe pain and, for allergic individuals, life‑threatening anaphylaxis. Authorities warn against folk pest‑control methods, recommending professional treatment to avoid worsening infestations.
