Lithuania Seimas extends parental leave benefits to children aged 14

The Lithuanian Seimas has passed amendments to the Labor Code that will extend additional rest days for parents. Starting January 1, 2027, employees raising children up to 14 years of age will be eligible to utilize these days, an increase from the previous age limit of 12.

Proponents of the law, including initiator Jurgita Šukevičienė, argue that the change supports family-friendly policies and helps reduce emotional burnout and absenteeism by providing support during critical stages of a child's emotional development. The amendments also extend these benefits to legal guardians and professional military personnel.

While the move is viewed by some as a vital investment in child welfare and social stability, critics have raised concerns regarding the potential economic burden on businesses and the public sector, as well as the organizational challenges it may present.
