Lithuania to develop AI-powered airspace surveillance system

The Lithuanian Ministry of National Defense has announced a state contract to develop an integrated airspace surveillance and control system. The project, which has an estimated budget of approximately €5 million, aims to create a unified ecosystem by using artificial intelligence to aggregate real-time data from military sensors, radars, and other institutional infrastructures.

Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas stated that the system is designed to improve the identification of drones and other aerial threats, providing better early warning capabilities for both state institutions and the public. The system will allow for continuous tracking of objects as they move across different territories and will transmit information to regional authorities and critical infrastructure operators.

The implementation will follow a three-stage plan. A pilot version is expected to be operational by early 2027, at which point the system should integrate all connected sensors and air defense assets. By 2028, the infrastructure is scheduled to be integrated with the data transmission platforms used by NATO allies.
