Lithuania to launch distance‑based Via Toll road fee system in 2027

Lithuanian road‑infrastructure firm Via Lietuva has presented the electronic “Via Toll” system to carriers. The system will become operational on 1 January 2027, replacing the current annual vignette scheme for heavy‑vehicle categories (M2, M3, N1, N2, N3).

Under Via Toll, road‑user charges will be calculated from the actual kilometres travelled, using a mobile app, on‑board units (OBU) or a self‑service portal. Drivers can also purchase single‑trip tickets via the portal, eliminating the need for dedicated hardware. Existing annual vignettes will cease on the launch date, with compensation mechanisms for unused portions of 2026‑year vignettes.

The system will integrate with the vehicle registry and a network of about 600 cameras and speed sensors to verify compliance. Payments can be made electronically through banks or card providers; cash is not accepted. Officials estimate the new model will generate roughly €110 million per year, with rates projected to remain among the lowest in the EU, and aim to allocate collected funds back to road maintenance and upgrades.
