Lithuania to modernize air quality monitoring system

The Environmental Protection Agency of Lithuania has signed contracts to modernize the national air quality monitoring system. The project, funded by the European Union, has a total value of approximately 3.5 million euros.

The initiative includes the installation of one new monitoring station and the upgrading of 18 existing stations. Key technical improvements involve expanding the monitoring of PM2.5 particulate matter and modernizing data transmission and evaluation systems. Additionally, the Air Quality Research Information System (OKT IS) will be updated to improve data management and analysis.

According to Vilma Bimbaitė, head of the Air Quality Assessment Department, the new equipment will allow for a broader spectrum of research, including the measurement of new pollutants and lower concentrations using accredited methods. These upgrades aim to provide more accurate, real-time information to both specialists and the public regarding air pollution trends and compliance with safety standards across different regions of Lithuania.
