Lithuanian environmental monitoring and protection efforts
Overview
Lithuania is advancing environmental protection through both infrastructure modernization and increased public reporting of violations.
The Environmental Protection Agency has initiated a 3.5 million euro project, funded by the European Union, to modernize the national air quality monitoring system. This project involves installing a new monitoring station, upgrading 18 existing stations, and improving the Air Quality Research Information System (OKT IS) to better track PM2.5 particulate matter and other pollutants.
Parallel to these technical upgrades, the Environmental Protection Department (AAD) reported significant results from the ‘Tvarkau Lietuvą’ initiative. Over a three-year period, residents reported 4,346 instances of pollution and environmental violations, with 2,959 cases resolved. The majority of these reports involved illegally discarded waste, such as construction debris and car parts, with the highest concentrations of reports occurring in the Vilnius, Klaipėda, and Šiauliai regions.
