Lithuania: VMVT warns of increased wolf activity near farms

The State Food and Veterinary Service (VMVT) has issued a warning regarding increased wolf activity near farms and residential areas in Lithuania. The period between August and October typically sees a rise in wolf activity, posing a risk to livestock such as sheep, goats, and calves.

Authorities advise animal owners to take proactive measures to ensure safety. Recommendations include keeping livestock in barns or well-secured enclosures at night and regularly inspecting fences and gates for damage. The use of electric fences, motion-activated lighting, and sound or light deterrents is suggested as a supplement to physical barriers.

Domestic pets are also at risk, particularly dogs that are left tied up outdoors overnight. While some believe a barking dog may deter a wolf, the VMVT warns that noise can actually attract predators to the property.
