Lithuania warns of heightened forest fire risk after weekend blaze surge

The State Forest Service (VMU) reported that 16 forest fires burned approximately 6.5 hectares over the recent long weekend, with most incidents occurring in the Šalčininkų region. This brings the year's total to about 50 fires, the largest being in Jurbarkas where a power line caused a 2.1‑hectare blaze.

Meteorological forecasts predict rain, but officials say it may not be enough to reduce fire risk. Residents are urged to use well‑maintained vehicles, avoid discarding matches, cigarettes or glass, keep fires only in designated areas, tend them constantly, and fully extinguish them before leaving. In case of uncontrolled fire, the public should call emergency number 112 and move away from the wind direction.

VMU emphasizes that individual actions are crucial to protect the country's forests during the dry spell.
