Lithuania: Waste management and maintenance guidelines for All Saints' Day
As All Saints' Day approaches, authorities in Lithuania are providing guidance on cemetery maintenance and waste management. The Šiauliai Region Waste Management Center advises residents to avoid artificial flowers and plastic decorations, as these items are non-recyclable and contribute to environmental pollution. Instead, the use of natural materials is encouraged.
Regarding waste sorting at cemeteries, green waste such as leaves, grass, and natural wreaths should be placed in green waste containers without plastic bags. Glass candle holders should be placed in glass recycling, while metal lids belong in plastic and metal containers.
Additionally, the Ministry of Environment has clarified the legal procedures for neglected gravesites. A grave is officially considered neglected if it has not been maintained for at least two years following a formal warning process. If a site remains untended for a year after a written warning from the cemetery manager, the matter is reported to the municipality, which may then initiate a process to transfer maintenance responsibilities to other parties.
