Lithuania border guard injured in migrant confrontation involving underground tunnel
A Lithuanian border guard was injured during a confrontation with migrants near the Belarus border on July 26. The incident occurred in the Kapčiamiestis Frontier Station area after authorities discovered an underground tunnel dug to facilitate illegal crossings.
Reports indicate that while officers were detaining several individuals exiting the tunnel, approximately 20 more migrants emerged and assaulted the guards. During the scuffle, migrants allegedly attempted to drag one officer into Belarusian territory, though he managed to escape. The injured officer is currently on sick leave.
A pre-trial investigation into the unlawful crossing of the state border was opened on July 27. Additionally, an internal investigation has been launched regarding the conduct and leadership of the State Border Guard Service (VSAT) following questions about the adequacy of the response to the group of migrants.
