Lithuanian border guards intercept contraband drones and migrants
Lithuanian State Border Guard Service (VSAT) officers have intercepted multiple smuggling attempts and irregular migration attempts along the border with Belarus.
Over the weekend, officers in the Šalčininkai district neutralized two drones flying from Belarus carrying illegal cigarettes. One drone was found near Dumblės village carrying 100 packs of ‘NZ Gold’ cigarettes, while a second drone near Beržiškiai village was found with 750 packs of ‘Minsk 5 Superslims’. This brings the total number of intercepted drones this year to 67, surpassing the total for all of last year.
In a separate incident in the Druskininkai municipality, two suspected irregular migrants attempted to enter Lithuania through a culvert used for the Kusenka stream. The individuals were observed via surveillance cameras carrying metal scissors, presumably to cut through the metal gates installed at the end of the culvert. Upon hearing approaching patrol vehicles, the individuals retreated back into Belarus.
